R.I.P. Godzilla Bearded Dragon (2005-2009)

Zilla started limping in July 2008 and it took three visits to the vet and >$700 before they found the tumor in his right arm. Towards the end, he could still get around on his own but would only barely use that arm to balance. Godzilla died on April 15, 2009 and we still miss him very much. Rest in peace, sweet Zilla. You will be missed.

Another Day Another Anoint

Spike had his 5th birthday this August and he's still doing great. He definitely shows signs of old age but we're so happy our first baby is still so healthy and happy.

He looks ferocious here but he's just excitedly anointing the carpet...

Ferra died on April 13, 2009. She was a sweet, old ferret and had lived a great life but it was still so sad to see her go.

R.I.P. Clerra Ferret (2002-2007)

Clerra died on Wednesday night.
She had lymphoma, and probably an adrenal tumor. Jen and I miss her very much, and we're both very sad, but Ferra seems to be getting along just fine.

Rest in peace little Weasel; you will be missed.

Unless you are in serious denial or unfamiliar with the data that has been recorded, you know that the planet is experiencing a worldwide climate shift, and all of the science points towards human causes and responsibility. The last direct effect that climate change was when that poor little hedgie lost his spikes and almost died.
Now it's the poor little beardies that face the trauma.

Scientific American has an article on a study being done in Australia on Bearded Dragons. The results show that increased temperature while beardies are developing inside the egg results in changing of sex.

Between temperatures of 22 degrees C (72 degrees F) and 32 degrees C (90 degrees F), the eggs hatched an equivalent number of males and females. But once temperatures climbed above 34 degrees C (93 degrees F), the majority of hatchlings were female.
...
At high temperatures, only two males were born out of 35 eggs that hatched. Furthermore, 17 would-be males had been transformed by heat into females.

So what does this mean? Basically this study shows that prolonged exposure to above-average temperatures during prenatal development will affect a Bearded Dragon's sex if they are male. Application? If the Earth's climate continues to increase, beardies will lose sexual diversity in the wild and will face some serious endangerment issues.

Let's all stop for a minute and hope for Godzilla's sake that this doesn't happen. Godzilla's not actually in any danger. He lives in a controlled environment, he's already hatched, and he's not making baby lizards, but I'm sure that he'd be sad to find out that some of his wild siblings are affected by global warming.

If you've never been there, or you need a refresher, just watch this (AHS Walk 2006). It's a great time, and it's so much fun. They have free food -- vegetarian options of course -- and the best part is that you are supporting the Animal Humane Society.

We should also mention that Jen smelled Spike after his anointing fit, and she said that it smelled like curdled milk.

I just saw this story today. This is very sad,
and I thought it was bad when the flowers were blooming.
Luckily for us, Spike doesn't hibernate -- he also lives indoors.
I think it's time to stop fighting climate change efforts
because your pastor votes republican.

We met him in Duluth on Dan's Birthday.
He's kinda like a sloth spliced with a monkey.

New "Labels"

So apparently Google has started implementing some "Google Accounts" action in Blogger (they've owned Blogger for a few years). When logging on today, I found a prompt to update my blogs from "Blogger basic" to the new "beta Blogger". I was hesitant to do it, but I found out that all blogger blogs will be required to switch in a few months, so what the hell -- I switched now.

It's really cool though. Just as in Gmail (if you don't know, it's awesome), the posts can be categorized with "Labels". I'm really excited about this because I've always liked the tags that other blogs have and I wanted it. The labels will be on each post, but I am also going to add a list on the sidebar (like the DaJAF archive) so access to the labels will be simple and fast.
Here are the labels so far: Spike, Godzilla, Weasels, At the Zoo, and Wildlife.

All Formats Are Equal...

From now on at Dan and Jen's Animal Friends, we are going to try to post all videos in both Quicktime Movie (.mov) and Windows Media Video (.wmv) format. We know that since Apple and Microsoft art at war with each other, their videos don't play so well on their competitor's machines.
We are also going to go back and convert some of our old favs into .mov's, i.e. Toobin', Dancezilla.
Quicktime format will be posted first, and if life gets hectic like it has been, .mov's will take precedence.

I guess all formats are equal,
but some are more equal than others.

Here's a cute little vid that Dan got last night at his dad's.
Merry (darker and bigger) was trying to show his alpha
male status to Clerra who wasn't too keen to ablige.
She is the one squealing, but it looked like she was getting
more bites in - especially at the end.

Ferra and Clerra have been with them for a couple of weeks because we are in between homes right now and our apt won't allow ferrets. We are going to be trying to get more videos more consistantly. It's just been hard with the moving, school, and work.
Sorry for the video quality too. It was taken with the iSight in our MacBook, and we're still trying to figure out how to get the most out of iMovie HD.

Spike's been doing this a lot lately, and he usually does it
for about an hour. He wakes up and starts running like a madhog.
We think that since he always checks for food after a wheel run,
he thinks he can turn back time to when there was food
in the dish so he can enjoy the Science Diet.

We should also mention that we had to adjust the lighting,
but we didn't adjust the speed at all

Also, sorry we've been MIA for a while. We're trying to
move, and it's been hectic cleaning the house.

They were being fed by some people, and the little catfishes
in the water below them kept trying to steal their grub.

Last night, since we are members of the MN Zoo, we got to go to see a sneak peek of the new exhibit, Africa: Summer on the Savanna. It was really cool. The new animals were really great to see, and the workers, trainers, and volunteers were full of great information. Check out the pages linked here; they have commercials for the exhibit and a feed for a podcast about it.

Like we said, this was just a sneak peak, and there is going to be a big celebration this Saturday (5-27) for the official opening.

Dan saw this guy on the way home from school.
He was just swimming around for a while,
and he actually slept while in the water.
Dan was making (or trying to make) his Loon call so
he would call back, but he had no luck.
On the plus side, you do get to hear Dan's call a lot.

So Gosling Week is here again like clockwork. For those of you who don't know, Gosling Week is the first week when the Canada Geese babies (goslings) first make their appearance. Jen and I have dedicated this week to them, and in addition to a couple goodies starring our companion babies, we will be showing a video of the 2006 goslings every day this week.

We like that she's finally standing up for herself.

A couple weeks ago, on April 17th,
we went to the MN Zoo for fun.
While walking past the cow barn, we saw a mass of people
inside huddled around one of the pens. Turns out a cow
named Dixie was in labor, and she was about to give birth.

We were there for about an hour, and we got about
15 minutes of footage. That's why it took so long to
get the video up. It was hard to decide what to cut out
even though most of you won't watch the whole video.

The best part is when the Dixie acknowledges her baby.
Hope you enjoy the beauty of life.

Yesterday was the Animal Humane Society's Walk for Animals. It was really fun. They had a lot of different animals: pigs, goats, ponies, and of course all the regulars -- Dan brought Spike. We didn't actually participate in the "walk", but the rest was like a carnival for the animals. They had free food for people and treats for animals.

Hide and Seek with Godzilla

We just came upon this site called Fish School.

The site is up to sell instructions on how to train your fish

to do simple tricks using positive reinforcement.

The coolest part of the site is their gallery page.

They actually have videos of their goldfish doing some

of the tricks that are teachable through their kit.

It just shows how smart fish really are. We love it!

R.I.P. Harley

On Saturday, January 21st, 2005, Minnesota Zoo dolphin Harley died. He had just been born the previous summer, and was reportedly doing very well in regards to training and behavior. The calf leapt from the water for unknown reasons and hit his head on the dock outside of his tank. Although he was returned to the water with his mother Rio, the young dolphin passed away.
An x-ray showed that Harley had fractured his skull, and the trauma of that incident had been the cause of death. He died on the 7-month anniversary of his birth.

Jen and I were very sad to hear of this news. Although Harley was too young to perform in shows, we had seen him leaping playfully from the water in his tank during a dolphin show the Sunday prior to the incident. He was so small and cute; we wish we could have seen him do shows like the others. You live on in our memories Harley.

They are great neighbors,

Omighty Okapi

This beautiful animal is an Okapi.We have never met one, but we figure most haven't.
They are the only close relative to the giraffe,
and they look like a combo of it's long-necked cousin,
a hyena, and a zebra. They are so rare that they can
only be found in one forest in Africa.

The Wood Duck family was next to my shed.

The momma separated herself from the babies so

the predator (me) couldn't hurt them. Notice how she

runs by and flaps her wings on the ground to appear

injured? It was unnecessary because I only wanted to

observe their beauty.

What is Dan and Jen's Animal Friends?
DaJAF is a blog featuring videos, photos, and honorable mention of our animal friends. Our animal friends are any animals that we meet or know. Some we live with; some we just visit.

Who are Dan and Jen?
We are a happy couple who love animals very much. We are both ethical vegetarians, and although we aren't activists, we support animal rights reform. We blog because we see the beauty and hilarity in many animals, and we want to share our sightings with the world.

Where/How Do Dan and Jen Get Their Video?
We get our content from a variety of ways: at our home,in our neighborhood or the homes of family and friends, and at zoos that we visit.

What Cameras Do Dan and Jen Use?
For video, we use a Sony DCR-HC21 MiniDV Handycam, and for photo and video, we use a Canon Powershot A75. Each work very well but once you start recording with the Canon, you can't adjust the zoom or focus, but the process of loading video to the computer is much easier with it. We have a 1GB memory card in the camera, and that allows many pictures and videos.

What Editing Software Do Dan and Jen Use?
We use iMovie (newer) and Windows Movie Maker (older) to edit and produce our videos.

How Was DaJAF Created?
We followed the excellent, detailed, step-by-step tutorial on Freevlog. They show you how to make your own videoblog for free.

How Much Does This Site Cost To Run?
Nothing. Aside from the obvious cost of a camera, a computer, and Internet access, everything that we do on this site is free. The site, the video and image hosting, the video archive page, and the fun little tools to make it. Go to Freevlog to make a free blog for yourself; their tutorials are on video.

Who Hosts Video For DaJAF?
Our videos are hosted by blip.tv. We tried to have the Internet Archive host for us but their server won't accept our file format or something. Blogger, Flickr, and the Archive host our photos.
